Will A Second Job Put Your Career at Risk or in Overdrive

Will A Second Job Put Your Career at Risk or in Overdrive Will A Second Job Put Your Career at Risk or in Overdrive So with substantial pay rises out of the question, many economically squeezed workers are looking at alternative sources of income such as a second job with studies showing that around 5 percent of the workforce may be moonlighting (or performing second jobs). But, there has in the past been a negative association with moonlighting with it being seen as a little illicit and being born out of economic desperation. But, it doesnt always have to be this way, as if done well, moonlighting can not only boost your income but be a stepping stone to a better life and career. And so how can you moonlight in an effective and career enhancing way?Call me boring, but to start with you need to check your employee handbook and make sure you comply with any company procedures around taking a second job so you dont put your main job at risk. If your employer has reservations on you taking a second job you could use this as an opportunity to open negotiations for a pay rise, promotion or additional hours within your current place of work. You should be aware that you will most likely experience a 50 percent decline in productivity after you have worked 40 hours in a week and there will be a general decline in productivity after you have overworked for four weeks in succession. Youll also be at greater risk of burnout. This burnout risk can be reduced if your second job is materially different to your main job. Lets say you work at a desk with figures all day, then your second job might involve you working outside doing something more manual. Working in a different field is a good political play too, as there is much less option of a conflict of interest occurring with your current employer. So, there is no doubt that doing a second job can boost your income and help you reach your financial goals in the short term, but its not a sustainable long-term strategy to work 50-60 hours a week, as you are likely to burnout and damage your health. This is why I believe that there should be a wider plan to your moonlighting, e.g. you are doing it for a few years to achieve a known goal, which should be that you dont have to hold down a second job. This means that you could be acquiring experience or training in a new job area where you can eventually earn more money you are getting more money to fund an entrepreneurial business venture to buy a home, etc.The point is that working a second job is really only a temporary strategy and should not be considered a long-term approach. It should ideally be a tactical tool to enable you to reach a short/medium term goal or to get into a position where you dont need to work in a second job.

How to go get exactly what you want

How to go get exactly what you wantHow to go get exactly what you wantIm truly inspired. Heck, I just got to see Oprah Winfrey and Seth Godin deliver two keynote speeches in the past couple days. How has your week been?I just got back from an amazing four days in Washington, DC. I attended the annual Association of Talent Development conference and learned a tremendous amount. As Ive grown into my true professional self over the last couple of years, Ive continued to become mora passionate about leadership development and wanting to help and serve others. This conference, in so many ways, was validation that Im doing the right thing.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe point of todays post is to help you recognize when youre on the right track- what that looks like, and what its all about. We all pass sign posts on our life and career journey. Sometimes we notice them. Sometimes, w e dont. It became apparent to me in the past several days as I continued to learn, continued to grow, that Im doing the right thing. That Ive surrounded myself with some special people that have been willing to help. But also, that Ive truly gone after my dreams. Im getting it.My hope for every one of you is that you will realize exactly what it is that you want to do- then get after it with intensity, hope, love and commitment. All right, all right. Thanks, Mr. Inspirational, you may be thinking. I hope you know above everything else, Im always substance over style. So, what do I mean by going and getting it?I define this as an everyday commitment to doing work that you believe in with all your heart, and most importantly, that will ignite the passion inside of you and fulfill you in the long-term.Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway.?- ?Earl NightingaleGoing and getting it means that youre (above everything else) willing to do two things1 and 2) Learn and take Action. In order to take action in life, we have to feel confident in what were doing. Part of feeling confident is feeling knowledgeable. Its having an expectation that things are going to work out. Maybe not right away, but with time, you believe and have confidence that youre going to get what you want.Learning can come in a variety of ways. Its reading books, listening to podcasts, watching help videos, engaging with experts in your field and attending conferences, among many other things. Its having a thirst for knowledge, in the hopes that you will gain the tools you need to build toward the lofty goals and dreams that you have. And then, of course, committing to this for the rest of your life. Lifelong learning is really where its at. And with the Internet at our disposal, theres no excuse to give up or stop. Our education doesnt end in the school system. It should be a constant throughout our journey. The more you get exposure to experts, leaders, and people in your field, the more you realize, I can do this. This is my timeThen, the taking action part gets wrapped up in that awesome, electric momentum and you keep going every day.We all define our own success. But, there are certainly common threads to getting on the track to do great things.FocusDisciplineLove for what you doA willingness to create and do good for the benefit of othersAs you reflect on all that youre doing, think about whether youre learning and taking action in a way that will get you to the level that you want to be. There are no guarantees in life, but I do believe hard work and a positive attitude will assure you that you find fulfillment in whatever you choose to do.If youre not on the right track, take a minute and determine what it might take to get centered and focused around what you truly want. Reach out to me, let me know if I can help you.If youre already on the right track, be content with your progress, but keep asking yourse lf whether you can do more to gain an edge. Make that extra call. Reach out to that former colleague. Attend that conference. Record that video and share your expertise with the world.Go get it. What to Remember When You Want to Give Up - The Muse

What to Remember When You Want to Give Up - The MuseWhat to Remember When You Want to Give Up How many times have you stared aimlessly at a blank document with no idea what to do? If your answer is never, take a walk around the block and think deeply about the lie youve just told. Even people who crush it at their jobs most days come across projects that are so tough, they just want to say, Oh forget it, Im going out for an ice cream cone and never coming back. Im bedrngnis here to tell you not to treat yourself to dessert every now and again, but before you throw your hands up in defeat and walk away from something difficult, here are a few things you should remember. 1. Its OK to Step Away for a Minute- As Long as You Give Yourself a DeadlineHey, I get it. Its a good idea to step away from pesky tasks occasionally to clear your mind and do something nice for yourself. Theres nothing worse than gazing into your computer monitor and saying, The answer is in this thing somewhere over and over again. However, its also important to keep yourself accountable when you do need a breather. Its up to you to determine if 15 minutes is enough time to step away, or if you just need to put the entire thing down until the next day. But, when you do figure out how much time you need, dont let yourself go beyond that. That might mean creating an event on your calendar or even leaving yourself a note on your monitor. No matter what you come up with, give yourself the break you need (and can reasonably take), and once its up, get back to work.2. Remember This Is Not the First Challenging Thing Youve Had to DoId wager that no matter how far along you are in your career, you had to figure out some tricky problems to get to where you are today. And sure, I know a thing or two about looking at previous accomplishments and saying, Oh, that little thing? That just took a little patience, scotch tape, and a very blunt conversation with my boss. The truth is that even the little things are evidence that you have the right amount of determination and skill to tackle the project youre stumped by in this moment. Youve powered through plenty of other challenging tasks in the past. Theres nothing stopping you from taking this one on either. 3. Asking for Help Doesnt Make You a FailureIf youre anything like me, one million thoughts and emotions run through your mind when someone suggests asking for help. You dont want to look incompetent, or you dont want to bother someone else with your problems (which youre convinced are kind of stupid). But heres the thing Everyone has been exactly where you are, dealing with a project that doesnt seem to have an obvious solution. And because everyone can relate to that, most people youll come across will be pretty empathetic about your predicament. Even better, if someone on your team has a solution, he or she will probably be willing to share. So, while it might seem like a great way to sabotage your career, dont be afraid to ask for help, even if all you need is a little reminder that you can do this. 4. You Really Can Do ThisAdd this to the list of the cheesiest sounding things Ive ever written, but seriously, its true. There are plenty of reasons you should remember this whenever you dont think you can do something at work. For starters, Ive made no secret of the fact that when I was on the hiring end of things, I had some pretty lofty standards for candidates. I had those because it meant that when people did successfully make it through multiple rounds of interviews, we could feel confident in the fact that even when they inevitably hit a wall, they were smart and resilient enough to find a way to get it done. That is 100% true about you, too. Your boss didnt hire you because you were good enough. Your boss hired you to get stuff done, even if it doesnt go your way right off the bat. So you really can do this. Its jarring when you have days at work where all you want to do is flip your desk over and tell everyone youre going for a two-year walk around the block. Sometimes tasks are harder than you think they should be and youll want to give up. But youre not alone in feeling this way sometimes. Rather than throwing in the towel, take a deep breath, (re)read the above, feel confident in the fact you can get this done.

3 ways to deal with someone who shares too much in the office

3 ways to deal with someone who shares too much in the office3 ways to deal with someone who shares too much in the officeThis ones a classic You go out of your way to not share too much about your personal life at work so your colleagues feel comfortable working with you, but sometimes, someone hasnt gotten the memo.Heres how to work with someone who overshares.Say this when a coworker shares unwanted gossip with youChris Hogan, author of Retire Inspired Its Not an Age. Its a Financial Number, and a Ramsey Solutions financial coach, told the Chicago Tribune how to handle gossip at work. When people share personal information with you, its a sign that they trust you. While thats not a bad thing, there is a line you dont want to cross, Hogan said. Youll know youre about to cross that line when the conversation turns to gossip. Put an immediate stop to it by telling co-workers youre not comfortable with the discussion and suggesting they speak to their leader or babo instead. He continue s, saying how sharing too much doesnt always fall into the oversharing category, but also says what to do if you feel uncomfortable.Turn the tables on your boss in a productive waySometimes, you just have to keep it moving - even with your supervisor.Writer and 10Pearls Director of MarketingRikki Rogers writes in The Muse that when the person oversharing is your boss, one method to use is to change the subject (bonus points if the new topic is work-related) after mentioning what she refers to as Workplace TMI.Sometimes an abrupt segue is all the TMI-perpetrator needs to realize that he has crossed into dangerous territory. Offering an unexpected change in topic (Oh, speaking of an unnatural relationship with house cats, I just remembered we need to meet about the new inventory process) brings your boss back into the reality of the social situation. This method wont offend or embarrass, but will convey your discomfort effectively, she writes.Do this if you share too muchAlyssa Cloug h, currently a social media editor at Domino Media Group, features commentary from Jason Dorsey, president at The Center for Generational Kinetics, in a Levo post. She writes about how when she asked her friends if theyve dealt with an oversharing coworker, they all had. But in explaining her tip to block other oversharers, she mentions that some friends also claimed to have probably or for sure played that role themselves at work.Clough writes that according to Dorsey, The best thing to do is to start to set up informal boundaries such as when you can talk, message, or hang out at work. If you dont put yourself first, no one else will. Its OK to let someone know that when youre at work, you have to focus on work.

Dumb rules that are frustrating your best peopleDumb rules that are frustrating your best peopleImagine having to read a 10-page manual before every meeting.Thats what used to happen at GM. Its workplace dress code was complex, copious, and lengthy?- ?10-page long to be exact.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraUntil GMs new head of HR shrank the restrictive dress code to two wordsDress appropriately. We live in a complex, dynamic world?- ?rules should make things simpler, notlagelage more complicated.Unfortunately, bureaucracy is growing, not shrinking. Thats what Harvard Business Review uncovered aftersurveying7,000 readers.Organizations have become more rule-bound and conservative in the past few years, according to fruchtwein respondents. Especially in the areas that create customer value?- ?like neuschpfung or customer service.Dumb rules stifle innovation, frustrate people, and slow your organization down. Here are five ways to enable your people?- ?use rules appropriately.1. Keep RulesSimpleAlign on what needs to happen. Let people figure out how.GMstwo-word dress codeis a perfect example. When Mary Barra became VP of Global HR, she knew bureaucracy was harming the organization.Brainstorming with her team, she came with the new, simple ruleDress appropriatelyHer team fought back?- ?they wanted to add more specifics. The beauty of a simple rule is that it defines the criteria. And lets people use their best judgment. You dont need to provide examples or cover all possible alternatives. One of the biggest pushbacks came from a senior executive. His team had to deal with government officials on short notice?- ?they had to be dressed for the occasion.Keep rules simple?- ?dont get caught by extreme situations. As Barra explains, I talked to the team, we brainstormed, and we agreed that the four people who occasionally need to meet with government officials will kee p a pair of dress pants in their locker. Problem solved.GMs were ready to dress appropriately without complicating the two-word rule.2. Dont Punish 97% of Your EmployeesEvery time Im helping clients simplify their rules, I get the same initial reaction. What happens with the offenders? Most organizations design rules with the wrongdoers in mind?- ?they end punishing their best talent.Quotingformer Chaparral Steel CEO,they are managing for the 3 percent. In other words, many companies create rules to control a small number of offenders. Control less, trust more?- ?as Iwrote here.5. Treat People like Adults?- ?and BePatientDumb policies try to anticipate every possible scenario. They are designed to tell people how to behave.Enabling rules should focus on values and mindsets?- ?let employees figure out how.Smart policies treat people like adults?- ?they dont want to control them.We all know that trave l is a significant expense for most organizations. People are encouraged to determine what is more beneficial for the company.Having employees performing at their best is a more sound financial decision than saving on 10% on airfare. If you want people to behave like adults, treat them like one.Be patient, though. It takes time to shift from helicopter bosses to trusting ones. Some people might ab use their new gained freedom.Give people time to adjust. Maximize Your Work Life Balance

Maximize Your Work Life Balance Maximize Your Work Life Balance Work is part of life, but it doesnt have to control the way you live. There needs to be a balance between the two that enables you to gain the most out of both. The issue is usually not in the realization that there is a problem or knowing that you should have a more balanced approach to your life professionals get bogged down by developing a plan of action and then actually sticking to it. The tricky part of change is to develop a concise course of action and then implementing that action in a consistent manner. Here are some tips to developing a program to maximize your work life balanceVisualize If youre struggling to find a healthy work-life balance, consider writing out an action plan to address the long-term goals you want to accomplish. Before you prepare your list, make aya every item is a S.M.A.R.T. goal that is, Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. A goal such as, I want to be rich, is n ot acceptable answer. I want to own a yacht by the time Im 50, is slightly better. The best possible answers involve specific places, times and events that are realistic to achieve.Plan Now that youve made your list of (realistic) hopes and dreams both on the work and the life side of the equation, its time to make some concessions. Thats right, you cant have everything. Trade-offs are part of the deal you cant spend all day long with your kids, or writing your novel, or gardening and expect one day be a hot-shot Wall Street lawyer. Extravagant career goals, life goals, and retirement goals all have their time and place in our imaginations, but SMART goals keep us in reality, and push us to achieve whats physically possible. Go through your list and ensure that your goals are grounded in a practical understanding of your own motivations.Implement The final step is to start living in line with your goals. You know what you want, now go out and get it. departure making changes today , even if they seem minor. You can save the big hurdles for later when youre ready to go all in. You have the guidelines in front of you, written out and re-evaluated so make and take the the stepping stones youll need to achieve tomorrows success. Keep your steps small and credibly achievable. For example, if you want to develop a better relationship with your child, make a concrete, but small step spend an extra 15 minutes talking after dinner. Too many professionals stop at the intangible, long-term goals and big plans they never perform the small steps required to make the plan happen.Do you notice how work life balance contrasts work with your life as if they are two separate entities? For most of us, work is a big part of our life. We should perhaps adopt a new vernacular to fit a modern professional lifestyle life, split between work and personal spheres. Work isinextricablyinterwoven into our lives, and we should instead look to improve our whole life instead of taking a bifurcated view of it as work and life. When planning and executing your work life balance plan, be sure to think of the whole first how to raise the quality and happiness in your whole life, and map those into actionable goals under each personal and professional sphere. When you have your overall goals mapped out in detail, the specific visualization, planning, and implementation described above can be put into place.
